TING* – To Use Your Ears with Your Eyes, and Pay Attention to The Sound with Your Heart
#graphic design / #design research / #editorial design / #soundart
Final outcome of my MA design research project in MA Graphic Media Design at London College of Communication.
The title was inspired by the structure of the old Chinese character for ‘listen’, as it was written in 1000 B.C. By examining the technological shift from analogue to digital, TING uses the laser jet printer — a mechanical device — as both instrument and process. In the course of observing and listening to the various print rooms at LCC, I ascertained that the complexity and density of printed information alters the assorted noises produced by a machine. In response, I devised a graphic-based score and through its reproduction the printer is played like an organ.
